Change is the new normal – Respond to it

Change over Plan

The last principle of the agile manifesto is by far not the least important one. This is it:

Responding to change over following a plan

This one is pretty clear but I guess many followers of classic project management might have an issue with it. Don’t get me wrong: It is crucial to have a goal and a plan to reach the goal – Always and the notion that “agile” gets to be planless is wrong. But it’s vital to be able to respond to a change in an always faster-changing world.

Already in 1871  Helmuth von Moltke wrote (translated from German), in the context of military strategy, the following:

No plan of operations extends with any certainty beyond the first encounter with the main enemy forces.

Helmuth von Moltke, 1871

So what, are practical examples?

Agile doing and agile being do focus heavily on this agile principle from the agile manifesto. This is why we do have sprints and a sprint review; to be able to adjust and react to changes no matter what they are.

It’s also expected of today’s employees as you need to be able to change and adapt depending on the current situation rather than following a fixed plan or being in a career from 18 to 65 in the same field.

Lessons learned: Get ready to adapt to change and practice this regularly by pushing yourself always in new situations, new technology, unused collaborations, etc.
